Fifth Imaging Unit Capabilities

Kodak NexPress SX Series

The exciting capabilities offered by Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions can help you and your clients see and feel print in a whole new way.

The addition of these high-impact visual, tactile and added security capabilities make digital print more relevant - and profitable - than ever before.

Video: Theo Pettaras, founder of Sydney-based printing company DigitalPress, and others talk about the competitive advantage that the Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit offers.

Dimensional Coating

The Kodak NexPress Intelligent Dimensional Coating Solution is the newest member of the business-building Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions portfolio.

DMCL_hero_375X250_a

Unmatched digital technology only available with Kodak's NexPress Digital Production Presses, Dimensional Printing gives specified text and images a raised or 3D effect that can help communications stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Dimensional Printing takes place inline, maintaining press productivity while a creating high-impact result.

How It Works

Dimensional Printing starts by loading Kodak NexPress Dimensional Clear Dry Ink into the Fifth Imaging Unit of a NexPress Press.  Dimensional Clear Dry Ink is a new dry ink that creates a clear “raised” layer on top of a page element after fusing. It can be used to enhance graphics, text, or a full color image.

The overall tactile effect is similar to thermography, but with a greater degree of control, Dimensional Printing can be set to produce variable heights, so you can more closely mimic the texture of a specific image. And unlike thermography, which can only be applied to ink, Dimensional Clear Dry Ink does not require ink or an image to adhere to the substrate.

Like all Kodak Nexpress Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions, Dimensional Printing creates prints that are recyclable. Dimensional Printing does not require any special de-inking and uses no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) so you can produce prints that drive more profit per page and is still safe for our environment.

Glossing

Boost the power of colour with high-impact, durable prints. Gloss or spot gloss starts with the same NexPress Clear Dry Ink used in the Coating process. After printing, the sheets are run through the Kodak NexPress Glossing Unit where the coating is transformed from a satin finish into a high gloss finish.

Gloss_hero

Use your Fifth Imaging Unit Solution to get high gloss results achieved with UV coating but with the benefits of recyclability.  Gloss coating not only adds impact to your prints, it extends the life of the print.

Spot Gloss

Spot gloss techniques can now be added for additional visual appeal and impact to your printed pieces.  The spot gloss is accomplished with the same clear dry ink and is applied to all CMYK ink on the page adding impact to all copy, text  and graphics while providing a photo  quality finish to all images.  Spot gloss can be applied to one side of the sheet or both sides as desire.  To learn more, download our Spot Gloss Application, Best Practices Guide.

Glossing FAQs

1.  How do I prepare my files for glossing? No special file preparation is necessary. Tell the press operator- they will specify the full gloss coating via the NexPress Front End.

2.  Can I apply glossing on just one side of a sheet? You can gloss either one side or both sides of a sheet

3.  Can I apply a spot gloss on only part of a sheet? Spot gloss options are now available.  To learn more, download our Spot Gloss Application, Best Practices Guide.

4.  Can a preprinted four-color digital sheet be glossed? No, you can not add gloss after the digital print is complete. The Clear Dry Ink must be applied in-line with the original printing

Light Black

With this single Light Black Fifth Imaging Unit Solution, you can achieve outstanding photo quality results comparable to other technologies that may require up to 3 additional colours.

Light Black_hero

The new inks with smaller particle size combined with Light Black Dry Ink as the Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit, utilizes proprietary algorithms to substitute the light black for specific colors resulting in smoother skin tones while maintaining superb detail.

Ideal Applications:

  • Any high quality photo application or image
  • Images with fine detail
  • Black and white images

Images benefit with a notable differentiation due to improved highlight detail and improved detail in shadows.  The particle size combined with the light black will also create greater consistency and stability particularly in highlight areas of the image.

Red Fluorescing

Red Fluorescing Dry Ink is another addition to the Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Solutions portfolio. This innovative ink is clear when printed on top of images and graphics, and is virtually invisible. When it is illuminated with an ultraviolet light source, however, it fluoresces a red color.  The intensity of the red can be controlled by the amount of NexPress Red Fluorescing Dry Ink that is printed on the page.

Red Florescing_hero

Red Fluorescing Dry Ink is applied inline, is ideal wherever visible barcodes are used for workflow automation, mailing systems and MIS connectivity, including:

  • Security applications that are hard to duplicate with normal photo-copiers or inkjet printers
  • On-demand books
  • Photo books
  • Personalized workflow tracking
  • 2D barcodes

Kodak NexPress Red Fluorescing Dry Ink removes the need to post-finish trim or create the design workarounds that have traditionally been used to eliminate or minimize intrusion of the barcode for your end customers. It is also a cost-effective way to add validation features to a variety of documents. You could even add hidden messages to photos, graphics and documents!

Like all NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions, Red Fluorescing creates prints that are recyclable. The Dry Ink does not require any special de-inking process and uses no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). You’ll be able to produce prints that drive more profit per page and are environmentally responsible.

The excellent image quality and unique benefits of Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions enable countless ways to deliver added value to your clients. Dimensional printing, clear coating, gloss, MICR, color gamut expansion and now, red fluorescent ink ... Let Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit Solutions help you build your business with high-impact, high-value print that can differentiate your services and drive margins.

Colour Gamut

The standard colour gamut of Kodak NexPress Digital Production Colour Presses is already 20% greater than that of standard offset four-colour printing. The NexPress Intelligent Colour Solution adds a red, green, or blue dry ink, increasing this expanded gamut an additional 16 to 22%. The result? More accurate reproduction of Pantone Colours or other custom colours in brand elements as well as better reproduction of previously difficult-to-match wide gamut colours.

colour gamut_hero_

Colour Gamut allows you to  maintain brand colours with Pantone® PMS or Goe or other custom colour matching, incorporate personalisation for higher response or grow volume of print with critical colour match.

Colour Gamut FAQs

1.  How do I prepare my files to take advantage of the expanded colour gamut offered by the Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit? Provide your photos in RGB with their input colour profiles intact and let the press do the conversion. In Adobe Photoshop Software in the “Save As” menu, check “Embed Colour Profile”. The press’s software can determine the optimal settings. If your images are available only in CMYK, there won’t be enough information to realize a benefit from the fifth colour.

2.  How do I set up my files to match a Pantone Colour or other special colour? Set up all your graphic elements as spot Pantone Colours, not their four-colour equivalents. The press software will help the press operator decide which fifth dry ink will yield the best results.

Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR)

MICR_hero

For financial markets or other businesses looking to expand their application range into colour transaction, TransPromo, or cheque printing, the Kodak NexPress MICR Solution can provide a flexible answer. With a simple change to MICR Dry Ink in the Kodak NexPress Fifth Imaging Unit, you’ll be ready to produce secure, reliable documents—inline.

Integrate full colour variable data to grow volumes and profits.  For added security, Micro printing is also available with Kodak NexPress MICR Dry Ink.  MICR Dry Ink is certified by both Pira and APACS.

MICR FAQs

1.  When I use MICR, does it affect my press speed? Productivity and press speed are not impacted by the use of the MICR Solution, however, MICR is only available as a Fifth Imaging Unit solution with the SE3000 or 100 ppm presses.

2.  Do my press and Fifth Imaging Unit need to only run MICR ink? No, the Fifth Imaging Unit is flexible and can be easily exchanged from run to run with MI CR Dry Ink, Dimensional Clear Dry Ink, Clear Dry Ink or Fifth Color Dry Inks.

3.  Does MICR require any off-line processing? No, the MICR Solution is a simple in line process that requires no off-line finishing or drying.

4.  How do I prepare my files for MICR? MICR Dry Ink is easy to use; define it in your production files by giving it the spot color name “NexPress DryInk micr” (use upper and lower case letters and spacing exactly as shown).
