Do you know how secure your data is?

06 Jun 2016

Enterprise Content Management (ECM) promises greater efficiencies in dealing with the flood of data your organisation already holds – or is about to receive from social media, big data applications, data analytics or even Internet of Things (IoT). When looking at your options, here are five critical data security considerations.

1.  Who wants to deal with a company insecurely holding data?

Australia’s Cyber Security Strategy, launched by PM Malcolm Turnbull in April 2016 says: “Getting cyber security right will mean we capture more of the opportunities the connected world offers. It will also make Australia a preferred place to do business.” Data security is a distinct competitive advantage.

2. Hosting choice is critical to ECM data security

No matter where you store your data, ensure it meets the requirements of the new Australian Privacy Principles under the 2015 Privacy Act Amendment. Hosting data offshore has data sovereignty implications.

3. Your ECM must secure your IP

Your ECM will inevitably contain data relating to your unique Intellectual Property (IP). Securing your IP in digital form within an ECM system is critical to your competitive advantage, or even business survival.

4. Employee information needs protection

If your HR department will be using your ECM system to manage employee data, strict access security will be needed to keep it safe within and beyond your organisation.

5.  Data in ECM should be more secure than it is now

Without an ECM system, you’re likely storing critical IP and employee or customer details in a maze of different systems and server or end-user drives. By consolidating your digital content in a single place, it can actually become infinitely more secure – as well as a reliable single source of truth.
